Learn more about the local plants and butterflies at two Wetlands and Wildlife Workshops offered at Quivira National Wildlife Refuge (QNWR) and the Kansas Wetlands Education Center (KWEC) on July 17 and 31. A Beginning Wildflower Workshop will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on July 17 at QNWR. Visitor Services Specialist Barry Jones will provide information about local wildflowers and lead a foray into the wilds of Quivira to identify several plant species. There is a maximum limit of 20 people, with a preregistration deadline of July 15. Call the refuge at 620-486-2393 to reserve a spot or for more information. Take part in a butterfly count and learn how to identify our local butterfly species at the Cheyenne Bottoms Butterfly Quest from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on July 31 at the KWEC. Led by Pam Martin, Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks environmental educator, participants will review butterfly species likely to be found in the area, then leave to stalk the elusive creatures for an official count. Maps and data sheets will be provided. There is a maximum limit of 30 people, with a preregistration deadline of July 28. Call KWEC at 1-877-243-9268 to reserve a spot or for more information. Both workshops are designed for adults and will involve time outdoors. Participants should dress appropriately for the conditions. Both events are FREE of charge, but preregistration is required. |
