Gender identity disorder is generally only briefly discussed in the nursing curriculum. Barton Community College is offering a continuing education workshop for healthcare professionals that will expand their knowledge on the topic from 9 a.m. - noon. Thursday, Jan. 24 in room F-30 in the Fine Arts Building on the Barton campus.The workshop will focus on the healthcare needs and treatment as well as best practices to promote respect and dignity for individuals with gender identity disorder. Achieving lasting personal comfort with the individual’s gendered self is a central theme throughout the program. The presenter will be Dr. Laura Arrowsmith. She works in a private practice in Tulsa, Okla. and serves as a member of World Professional Association for Transgender Health as well as on the Board of Directors for the National Center for Transgender Equality. She has lectured numerous times to multiple colleges, universities, nursing schools, graduate school programs, mental health and medical health conferences throughout the Midwest.Cost for the workshop is $30 and includes refreshments, materials, and three contact hours. Pre-registration is required by January 18.
